Artist Statement:
Vibrant Forest Collection: In this next generation series of ultra bright paintings sourced locally from subtropical Florida parks, inspiration is lifted from a luminescent palette that depicts forest paths that take a magical adventure through powerful tree canopies while whispering about the impact of digital technology and its preference to hyper-saturate nature, drawing reference from modern scenery and Virtual Reality.
This collection of impressionist style oil paintings feature bold and true color with optical blending of foliage laden sandy paths illuminated by a rainbow of gestural strokes to capture the glow of the sunlight through leaves during the magical golden hour of the day. The scenes take place at multiple subtropical island parks located at the Eastern coast of Florida tucked between ever-expanding cities.
A thick sense of atmosphere with impasto oil paint texture guides the viewer through inspired long walks in a forest where Plein air meets imagination in a vibrant nature paradise surrounded by daily life. Nostalgia for exploring our environment threads the series together while the allure of the wild is idealized in comparison to the reality of the invasive technology all around.

New Paintings, New Media: Inspiration behind the bright palette depicting forest paths comes from research on the impact of digital technology on the new preference for hyper-saturation of nature, drawing reference from Virtual Reality. For this work, some digital studies were rendered in 3D using the Tilt Brush app for the Oculus Quest VR system. |

Marshlands I & II
About Marshlands I & II
This series work consists of landscapes rendered in oil paint, inspired by the local parks, including the Dutton Island Preserve, Little Talbot Island State Park, and the Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve along the coast of Northern Florida, an area between land and sea characterized by the changing wind and tides, adorned with Spanish moss.
The series began with techniques in plein air, rendering of landscape, antique objects and the figure in personification of history and the alluring area where land meets sea. In Marshlands II, research on site, and recording of sounds and atmosphere of the march came into focus to inspire impasto oil paintings in the painterly style of Impressionism to underscore an art historical link towards previous depictions of the natural world with concern about technology.
This body of work engages in an idealistic search for solace in nature. The work provokes the audience into examining a larger question of if one can truly go back to nature or if there persists an idealized perception of nature found that breaks nostalgic expectations, as there become fewer quiet places in the world.
